Endometriosis is present when the tissue that is similar to the lining of the uterus occurs in other regions of the body. Symptoms of endometriosis may include hormone imbalance, fatigue, heavy or irregular bleeding, debilitating pain, nausea, digestive issues, anxiety, and depression. Currently, the only way to accurately diagnose endometriosis is through a laparoscopy (abdominal keyhole surgery). During this procedure lesions and cysts may be ablated (burnt off) or excised (surgically removed).
Repeat surgical interventions or consistent endometrial growth can impact fertility outcomes due to damage or blockage of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The immune dysfunction associated with endometriosis can also lead to implantation issues and recurrent miscarriage. These immune and implantation issues can also occur in women undergoing IVF treatments.
Acupuncture for endometriosis provides a natural, low risk and non-invasive approach to manage symptoms of endometriosis. Unlike western medical treatments, with Chinese medicine, there is no one size fits all approach. During our consultations, we determine each woman’s unique pattern of disharmony that is underlying the symptoms she is experiencing. We then aim to and assist the body to restore normal hormonal function and reduce any pain. Many Chinese medicine patterns relate to endometriosis which allows us to offer a targeted approach in managing symptoms of pain and discomfort throughout the cycle. Current research and clinical trials into the effectiveness of acupuncture have found significant improvements in blood flow to the ovaries and reproductive organs. This is thought to regulate hormones and decrease levels of pain. Other studies have found a reduction in pain as well as reduced inflammatory markers associated with endometriosis after a series of acupuncture treatments
Acupuncture’s effects are accumulative therefore we suggest a series of treatments to best manage any ongoing symptoms. Our comprehensive approach is what makes Chinese medicine an excellent therapy for women who suffer from debilitating pain every month.
